As a general rule of thumb, once you start to experience discomfort from tooth decay, it has moved to the more sensitive parts of the tooth, as the enamel doesn\u2019t have any nerve endings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Warning Signs That You Need a Root Canal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some specific indicators that you need root canal therapy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A darkening tooth<\/li><li>Lingering pain that doesn\u2019t seem to subside<\/li><li>Pain and sensitivity to cold or hot temperatures<\/li><li>Pain when you apply pressure to the area, or when eating<\/li><li>The gums are tender and swollen in the same area as tooth pain<\/li><li>A red pimple-like bump near the gums in the area where there is tooth pain<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Purpose of Root Canal Therapy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A root canal is usually needed when decay has traveled to the inner part of the tooth where the canals and pulp are located. Thus, there isn\u2019t much time to spare if you desire to salvage the tooth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process starts with a dentist taking X-ray images to locate exactly where the decay is. Then, after local anesthesia is applied, a small incision is made into the tooth to gain access to the decayed tissue. After thoroughly cleaning the area, the dentist will fill the vacated space by applying a compound called gutta-percha. Then, the pulp chamber will be sealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Usually, after the restorative treatment is done, the dentist will take bite impressions that will be used to fabricate a replacement crown, which will usually take a couple of weeks to arrive from the dental lab. To protect your tooth and gums in the interim, a temporary fixture will be placed.
